Alright, we are talking about off road trails near Stockton, California.  Last Warning, the off road trails mentioned are Jeep trails and 4x4 trails large/wide enough to fit a passenger vehicle - no ATVs or dirtbikes talked about here.  The first off road trail near Stockton, California is Prairie City SVRA located 55 miles north of Stockton. There are flat, open grasslands, rolling hills with native blue oak trees, and acres of cobbled mine tailings left after gold dredges combed ancient river beds in search of gold during the late 1800s. Beginners as well as experts find the variety of terrain both challenging and enjoyable. Prairie City SVRA takes its name from the gold rush community that was located just northeast of the present-day park. Today, the only reminders of that 1850s community are some old mine tailings and a historical marker, California Historical Landmark #464, which is located at the intersection of Prairie City Road and U.S. 50. You can see what other wheelers are saying about Prairie City SVRA and other trails by visiting the Where2Wheel trails map here.

The entire trail is only about 4 miles long and only takes an hour or two. Reminder, you can browse the offroad trails map anytime for free on Where2Wheel.  There is a good chance that since writing this article that new off road trails near Stockton, California have been added, so click here to view the W2W map and check the area for yourself.

The last offroad trail near Stockton, California is Slick Rock Road located 100 miles northeast of Stockton. Much of trail traverses large rock slabs giving you a little taste of Moab. Silver Creek flows over rocks beside the trail with wonderful clear pools in which to relax and play. Unique places to camp along the way. The south end of trail runs along beautiful Utica Reservoir, a scenic place to camp, mountain bike and flatwater kayak. Street-legal vehicles only. The first part of trail is moderate and suitable for aggressive stock SUVs. The last part has some challenging hardcore obstacles. A good driver in a seasoned SUV can probably get through okay. Directions: Slick Rock is three hours East of Sacramento, California, or about 2.5 hours south of Reno, Nevada. Most people approach the trail from the California side. To get there, drive up Highway 4 past Bear Valley to Lake Alpine. Turn south off the highway at the west end of Lake Alpine. There are signs for Lake Alpine Campground. Can be driven in either direction. Return via difficult Rodriguez Canyon to make a loop. Many historic mines and buildings. Excellent spring wildflowers. Mildly rocky with steep, narrow switchbacks. Suitable for stock 4x4 SUVs with high ground clearance. The next offroad trail near San Diego, California is Arroyo Seco del Diablo Trail located 110 miles east of San Diego. The state park service and various guidebooks about the region list this trail as being one-way-only because of the steep, challenging Diablo Drop Off located near Fish Creek. Although it does not look particularly difficult as you stand at the top and look down, the loose sand makes it difficult to impossible for a vehicle to return up the drop-off. The trail leaves the easier route along Vallecito Wash 1.1 miles west of the intersection with Canyon sin Nombre. It travels up Arroyo Seco del Diablo, a side wash of Vallecito Canyon. For most of the way it twists within this sandstone canyon, traveling in the sandy wash. The loose and fragile walls of the canyon mean that rock and sand falls are common, and you are likely to have to climb over fallen debris. On windy days, dust and sand pour off the canyon walls like miniature waterfalls. Special Attractions: Challenging Diablo Drop Off; Twisting canyon of Arroyo Seco del Diablo through the Carrizo Badlands. High-clearance 4WDs are required. This trail has either a rough, rutted surface, rocks up to 9 inches, mud and deep sand that may be impassable for inexperienced drivers, or stream crossings up to 18 inches deep. Certain sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, and you may encounter very narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks or trees. Reminder, you can browse the offroad trails map anytime for free on Where2Wheel.  There is a good chance that since writing this article that new off road trails near San Diego, California have been added, so click here to view the W2W map and check the area for yourself.
